Why Is My HVAC Making That Noise? Sounds and What They Mean

An HVAC system making an unusual noise — banging, squealing, grinding, clicking, or hissing — is almost always signaling a specific mechanical or electrical issue, not normal operation. The exact sound points toward the likely cause: banging often means a loose or broken part, squealing usually means belt or motor bearing wear, and hissing can mean a refrigerant or air leak, so identifying the sound correctly is the fastest way to know how urgent the problem is.
We get a lot of calls that start with "it's making a weird noise" and not much else, which is understandable — most people aren't expected to diagnose their own HVAC system. But knowing roughly what different sounds mean helps you decide whether to schedule a routine visit or treat it as an emergency, and gives our technicians a head start before they even arrive.
Banging or Booming Noises
A loud bang, especially at startup, is one of the more concerning sounds an HVAC system can make. In furnaces, it's often delayed ignition — gas builds up in the combustion chamber before igniting, causing a small explosion instead of a smooth light-off. This is a legitimate safety concern and shouldn't be ignored.
- Furnace: delayed ignition, a cracked heat exchanger, or loose ductwork expanding and contracting.
- Boiler: water hammer from steam hitting trapped condensate, or loose piping.
- Air conditioner: a loose or broken part inside the compressor, like a piston pin or connecting rod.
- Ductwork: metal ducts expanding or contracting as air temperature changes (usually harmless, but worth confirming).
Why Steam Radiators and Boilers Knock
If you live in an older Queens building with a steam heating system, knocking or banging radiators are a genuinely common complaint, and the cause is usually mechanical rather than dangerous: trapped condensate (water) in the pipes gets hit by incoming steam, creating the knocking sound. This is often fixable by correcting the pipe pitch or replacing a failed steam trap, rather than requiring a full boiler replacement.
Squealing or Screeching
A high-pitched squeal almost always points to a belt or bearing issue. Older blower motors that use a belt-drive system will squeal when the belt is worn, loose, or misaligned. On newer direct-drive systems, a squeal more often signals a motor bearing starting to fail.

Clicking Noises
A single click at startup and shutdown is completely normal — that's the thermostat relay or control board engaging. Repeated or continuous clicking, though, often points to a failing relay, a malfunctioning control board, or in some cases a capacitor struggling to start the compressor or fan motor.
Hissing or Whistling
Hissing sounds usually mean air or refrigerant escaping somewhere it shouldn't. A refrigerant leak in an air conditioner or heat pump is a real concern — low refrigerant reduces cooling performance and can eventually damage the compressor if left unaddressed. Whistling from vents, on the other hand, often points to a closed or blocked register, an undersized return, or a duct leak restricting airflow.
Rattling and Vibrating
Rattling is frequently the easiest of these to fix: loose panels, screws, or a cabinet that has worked itself loose over years of vibration. It can also mean debris — leaves, small branches, or ice buildup — has gotten into an outdoor condenser unit. Persistent rattling from inside the cabinet, though, can indicate a loose component that's about to fail elsewhere.
Grinding or Buzzing
- Grinding: often a motor bearing that has failed or is about to — this typically needs prompt attention before it takes out the motor entirely.
- Buzzing (electrical): can indicate a loose electrical connection, a failing contactor, or a struggling capacitor — worth treating as urgent given the electrical component.
- Buzzing (mechanical): sometimes just a loose part vibrating against the cabinet, which is lower urgency but still worth a look.
Noises From Ductless Mini-Splits and Heat Pumps
Ductless systems and heat pumps have their own noise vocabulary. A soft whooshing from the indoor head during defrost cycles in winter is normal — the outdoor unit briefly reverses to melt frost buildup, and you may hear a faint hiss or gurgle as refrigerant shifts direction. A loud clunk or repeated clicking from the outdoor condenser, though, is worth a look, since it can indicate a fan blade hitting debris or ice, or a failing compressor mount.
Indoor heads that develop a rattly, vibrating hum over time often just need a panel tightened or a mounting bracket checked, since the wall-mounted design makes them more prone to picking up vibration than a sealed central-air cabinet. It's a quick fix when caught early, and one more reason routine maintenance pays for itself.
Why Noises Are Worth Taking Seriously Early
A noise you can hear is, almost by definition, mechanical energy going somewhere it shouldn't — vibration, friction, or pressure escaping instead of doing useful work. Left alone, most of these issues get louder and more expensive rather than resolving on their own. A $200 belt adjustment ignored for a season can turn into a full blower motor replacement; a small refrigerant hiss ignored for a summer can mean a burned-out compressor by fall.
When to Call for Emergency Service
Not every noise means shut the system off and call immediately, but some do. Treat these as emergencies: a burning smell alongside any noise, repeated loud banging from a furnace, a gas odor of any kind, or a complete loss of heat or cooling during extreme weather. For everything else — squealing, clicking, mild rattling — it's still worth scheduling a diagnostic visit promptly rather than waiting for the sound to get worse or the system to fail outright.
